Technological Control System

As of 1999, modernization of the Družba pipeline control system has been implemented so that the pipeline would reach a world-class level of safety and reliability.

In the first phase, an optical cable was laid along the pipeline to make the information exchange fast and safe. The control system enables administration of the entire complex system of the crude oil pipeline including three pumping stations, three terminals and closing valves from one control center in Nelahozeves. From this center, the operator is able to control all technological processes in all distant chambers and terminals (a remote control camera of closed-circuit TV is available in some locations). The system guarantees safe operation of the crude oil pipeline even in case of a breakdown, when the relevant part is switched off in a safe manner automatically. Aside from this, the operator may use an internal phone network connecting all operated workplaces along the pipeline.

The modernization reduced the risk of accident occurrence significantly and the safety and management level of the Družba pipeline correspond now to the IKL pipeline. It is very important to rigorously monitor the condition of both pipelines, and to determine a potential oil spill signaled by the Pipe Deck safety system.
